Your name seems familiar, but not the dates. We had a Steve Roth with us on track 22, at Barren Heights with one of the How. Btrys. Rainy season, mud up to the wazoo. Must have been August 1968, shortly after Patton took over. Arpan was TC at the time.
If that was you....welcome back!!

My first visit (hopefully not my last) to this site. I was in the 409th from September 1968 to its departure from 'Nam in 1971. I then did 5 months or so in Phu Bai until I was discharged on June 2nd. A lot of names ring bells, and I hope to get to a reunion one of these years. was a TA (In Phu Bai, they made me a Crippie!). My Army sevice really prepared me for my current career; I've been singing with the Metropolitan Opera Chorus for the last 24 years. I've been married almost 35 years, and have 5 kids and 3 grandkids. Hope to hear from you.

Hello fellow troopers. I hope that all is well with you. I moved to Sunny Isles Beach, FL from Indiana a little over five years ago. I love the outdoor activities here in Southern Florida. I have a small boat in which I duck hunt the Everglades and fish the cannels, bays and off shore. I love to fish the flats around Flamingo. I meet a loving latino lady from Honduras and we have been together for over five years. I retired this past October and just hunt and fish. I travel to Colorado every other year for an Elk hunt and go back to Indiana for deer hunting every year. I have a duck hunt and bear hunt planned for Manatoba in September of 2009l. I am always looking for someone to fish with me. If any of you are in my neighborhood stop by and we will wet a line.

I was assigned to the 409th out of the 8th in Phu Bai as an 05H and how I remember those PRD-1's too. Landed in Tay Ninh first before we were airlifted to Chu Lai with the 196th Light Infantry.

This is the first time that I have had the honor of browsing this site. I joined the ASA in 65, spent time with the 509th in Saigon; the 406th with the 101st 67/68; then to the 409th in 68/69 with Mr. Mollhoff and gang on the Outcasts Track 22, then off to reality with an early out for school. I am finally looking through the websites and am inpressed. If anyone remembers me, send out a note. Thanks, Randy.

Great website, Googled "05C20" and found you guys. I was an 05C20 with the 854th Signal Detachment out of Long Binh. (I know, a real REMF) We were TDY at a base that had a dirt airstrip at the edge of a rubber plantation, the French manager lived in a manor at the end of the strip. Was this Xuan Loc? Welcome home to all.

Hi guys
I see a few of us are registered for the reunion next month. Anyone in touch with LT Art Feldman?? Heard he was in CA. Like to get him to the reunion. He was a great OIC/OPS officer, while I (and the crew of the Outcasts on Track #22) probably one of his pains in the ass! But hope he can make it to the reunion.
Best to all.

HI, Troopers.

I served as the first VN linguist with the 409th (66-67) and, from a from a TDY mission with a Vietnamese Special Forces camp, brought back their Commandant's gift to me - Homer the Goat!

Elaine Cochrane Murphy, widow to our beloved Lt. Cochrane who was KIA in country, is writing a second book, and she would like to hear from those who served with him (66-67, when we first became the 409th). Please contact her.

Elaine's e-mail is: elaines999@adelphia.net.

You can still reach me at:
johndefresno@comcast.net; I still live in Central California.

I am retiring from police work this year, and I'm a Grandpa for the first time. I hope the photo attachment worked. It was taken in September 2008 at the hospital with the newborn, Caden Boehm. He's extremely handsome (looks like me).

Best wishes, and - Allons!

To whom it may concern,

I am the youngest of two daughters of Captain Greg Whitehouse and I understand that some of the 409th RRD troops served with my father when he was killed, he was riding along as an intelligence observer and they hit a land mine March 6, 1968, he was to come home for his birthday March 7 and never returned. We were in Paris France just prior to him leaving for Vietnam and we understand that he wore a 3 piece suit instead of uniform while we were there. We have only been able to locate one Officer that was actually there and he had a picture of my dad with a little Vietnamese girl. We are unable to have his military file opened due to various reasons unknown to us. Please, if you knew my father you can email me at the above email address.

GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU AND ALL THAT YOU DID FOR OUR COUNTRY.
Julann

Great site. I was an 05G with 409th from 9-67 to 12-67. Then got sent to the 265th RRC, 101st Airborne. Pretty exciting with 101st. Woundup with a secondary MOS of 11Bravo and earned a CIB. Somewhat unusual for ASA.

I served two tours in Viet Nam as an ASA trooper. The 1st was with the 175th RR C. from Nov 1968 to Nov 1969. The second was with the 409th RRD from July 1969 to July 1970. At the 409th I was assigned to the supply section. I mainly worked with Bill Yost. I do not remember the name of the supply sgt we had when I first got there in 69. We were still at Xuan Loc. Interesting times.

Hello 409th! I served with the Longknives from June/70 to December/70 in Di An as a tank mechanic. In my first week, I went to Quan Loi for a few days to help move vehicles back to Di An. At that time Jesse Long, Richard Kwiatkowski ("ski"), Tom Hale and Luther Pittman worked in the Motor Pool. Captain Stillwell was the CO, but was soon replaced with Captain Callahan. "Horrible" Hahn was the first shirt. In my hooch was Ron Ziemmer, Sammy (NMI) Torrisi, Richard Lindstrom, Mark Funk and Terry Boney. (Photo of Terry and I playing chess is in the Pix section). What a great job Marvin (and others?) has (have) done on the website. The company roster and photos took me back to those days that I hated at the time but look back on with nostalgia.(See the pix of me in front of the Orderly Room with the Company logo!) I didn't get to meet too many folks in my short time with the unit, but the ones I did meet will be in my memories forever. Larry

Hi Guys, it has been quite some time now since we've put anything on the site. Patty and I were in Melbourne Fl for the 19th Annual Vietnam Veterans and all Veterans Reunion this past weekend and had a blast. We met some interesting guys from all Services , also met two ASA Sergeant career Soldiers who had been with the 509th and the 303rd as well as Europe and Stateside. The ceremony at the Wall was very moving, the motto of this Reunion was " The Wall says it All!!!! Recently, I went to Fort Leonardwood Mo. for my sons
graduation from AIT, it really hits home now. He did very well, and received a "Trailblaser Award and was the Platoon Guide, as you can see I'm very proud of him. He is a Combat Engineer with Echo Company 3rd Bn. 15th Infantry Regt. 3rd Infantry Div. Fort Stewart Ga. As a Parent, I'm really concerned about the War and he will deploy in March. Please say some Prayers for all of our Forces not only in Iraq and Afganistan but all around the World, they need all of the support that we can give them now and when they come Home to the "World". The Reunion this weekend reminded me of how important it is to stay in touch with my time spent in Nam and with the "Longknives" of the 409th. Thanks again to Marvin for keeping the Link open. Good to get a surprise note from George "Woody" Woodruff and burn up a few bytes in the exchange. Next time we head south, we'll have to stop in and see him.
And - absolutely GREAT to see Lee Gentry and Vince and Rosemary Simmers at Ft Irwin for the welcome home celebration and barbecue. And thanks to the Chuckwagon Gang for the neat caps and aprons from the serving line. It was great to serve barbecue to our new vets! I suspect some of the new vets really don't have a clue about how nice the welcome home was, but quite a number did seem really appreciative of a "welcome home" from us old buggers.
The whole ceremony was nice, esp. the guidon retirement and wreathlaying - both of which were really moving.
And then Gov. Ahnold Schwartzenneger came and shook hands with a young specialist (we were never THAT young) standing beside us!
We stayed for the Regimental Ball in Las Vegas too. Spent supper with the new Regimental XO discussing their tour in Iraq - Had the best seat in the house!
Looking forward to seeing some of you in KCMO in Sept.

Hey guys, it's been some time since I put anything in here, still think about everyone though. Patti keeps in touch for me, I guess that I've just been lazy or something. Talked with Butch Shields not long ago, he's doing well and we recalled some exciting and funny times as well as some scary moments. Thanks again to Marvin for keeping this sight alive, hope that you faired well with Hurricane Dennis, and Cindy. Sorry that I haven't gotten a hold of you yet Jay! Andy said that he had a good visit with you, by the way, did you see the picture of Andy and his "Trick" Dog? Amazing!!! Well, time to hit the sack, will be thinking of all of you guys and especially our Kids Overseas tonight,God Bless them and keep them safe. God Bless America!!!! See Ya , Joe 68\69

Greetings all....I was in touch with Tex Cavender up until the last few weeks before he passed. Still haven't been able to take his name out of my address book. We got together a few times....always great. Steve Roth, you spent some time with the CIA. Any idea how I can get in touch with Ric Jacobson? He was my best man when I got married 30 years ago. Sure would like to run him down. ALLONS.......Prince

Good to see Oleske's note - hey Andy, just went through Merriman a coupla weeks ago- looking good, they're getting rain in the Panhandle. Your note of the pictures from O'Conner brought back memories. I'm planning to go to C.Springs in Aug for the reunion, will bring my album, and maybe a coupla maps I "borrowed" - hope to see some friends there. Jim Beard got in contact with me a coupla months ago.

Just dropped by to see what was new. Like Marvin stated back in January we are still searching for the rest of our guys. I am using an new sight 'zabasearch.com' which seems to be working quite well. If you want to join the search committee let us know or start with the trooper list and use the above search engine.
This years reunion is coming up. Right now will not make it due to other committments. Will see everybody in KC next year.
My condolences to Ron on the passing of his wife. I know we just met her in Daytona Beach but that still makes us all family and we are sorry for his loss.
Let's try to close the gap and find the remaining guys.

Your last company clerk, still working for you.

Just read in the "Thunder Run" ( the 11th Cav Nam Newsletter) that two alumni of the 409th passed on:

Lyndell (Tex) Cavender 67-68
DoD Sept 2004
Harry Hahn 69-70
DoD July 2002

I can still remember Tex playing his guitar and singing "Plastic Jesus".

Maintain an even strain.

Dennis Jones:
Harry was one of my closer friends in VN. I wished I could have caught up with him after service. I feel a very deep sence of loss. He was a person you absolutely could not dislike.

I was in V.N. from May '68 to Oct '69. The first 8 months I was with the big Red One, than I went to the 409th/11th ACR. There I came to know Harry Colon. It's all a big blurr to me now. I got out, went to college, went to Navy flight school, got kicked out of there (bad attitude, can you imagine that), and made a carrier in Fed. Law Enforcement. Retired to the mountains of Bama. I wished I could remeber names to go with the faces in my memory, they were a good bunch of guys.

It is with sadness that I pass along that Susan Barton, Ron Barton's wife,
pass away this morning after a long hard fought bout with cancer. The
family will receive friend Sunday night at Vogler & Sons Funeral home in
Winston Salem, NC and the service will be Monday at the same location. The
telephone # there is 336-732-6106 and Ron's # is 336-924-3758. Susan has
been to many of the reunions so some of us have met her and have grown to
admire her in her challenge. I know it is not possible for most to attend
but Ron would love to hear from anyone of his 409th buddies. His
association means a lot to him. He is a good one.

Thanks Ted

Gentlemen - I was an 05H TDY from Camp Humphreys in Korea who came to the 409th for the Cambodian incursion. I looked through all of the photos and recognized some faces and Shag the dog. I recognized places too like Di An and Quan Loi. I'd spent 18 months with the 335th (9th Inf. Div.) so I wasn't new to Vietnam and I had a great time with the 409th. Thanks for the memories!

Hey Guys, just wanted to say that in looking back into the Photo page, I really got a nostalgic feeling and I suppose that that time of our lives will always be a place that we can never forget, although we can't recall this one or that ones name the faces and attitudes remain. To the guys that I was out there with, just know that I think about us and our situations most every day, afterall, we were some special guys, weren't we? I pray that we all find some kind of Peace in the end, and think about our Kids fighting the Fight overseas today- God Bless Them All!!! I want to say Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays (alittle late) and I hope you all have a Happy and Healty New Year.

To my uncle: Im not surprised to see you here boosting support for our troops overseas, even with your health and family issues, you still take the time to remember how it feels to be at war, esp. during the Holidays...Know that I keep you in my prayers and I love you.

Daily living seems to get in the way of so many things we should do, we may not chat often but I stay informed...love ya

To the Men of the 409th RR Det.
Next week is OUR reunion in Daytona Beach. Marvin and several others have worked this last year trying to gather the troops. The 11th ACR has posted those that attending and there appears to be a small group considering that we now know the names of over 300 that served in our unit. If you can't be there this year please forward acknowledgement and messages so that we can make this a very successful event. See you at the REUNION. (I am the last person to serve in the 409th on the last morning report it said "1". Now it's time to rally the troops once again and make that number grow. Keep in touch.)

Hello Troopers of the 409th, first of all, I hope that all are well and in good Health. I'm sad to say that Friday I learned that one of my classmates from High School passed away from Multiple Cancers from Agent Orange poisening. He was in the 101st Airborne 68/69, and is one of the many to die in this way. As some of us traveled with the Cav. throughout 3 Corps, we were also exposed and now need to stay on top of our health issues. I hope that all have had a good Memorial Day, and remember all who have given the Ultimate Sacrifice then and even now this much later in life. Alons! Joe Harter 409th Fwd Unit 68/69

Pat Harbin:
Joseph you are right about the health issues and staying up with the agent orange info. I am 100% due to diabetes and its complications. All should be aware of the medical problems ahead for many of us.

Hi:
Just checking around the internet recently and found your site on the 409th.
My first and probably the best I had in the army. I was only there a few months and was one of the first group to leave out to Phu Bai when the 409th shut down in 1971. I was an 05H.
I arrived in November 1970 and left (I believe in March 1971) and spent the rest of my tour at Phu Bai. After Phu Bai I spent two years at the 7th RRFS at Udorn. I retired from the army in Jan 1990 and still serving here in Korea where I spent most of my time after all the assignments in Southeast Asia closed.
I came to Vietnam with most of my O5H class as at that time most of the 05Hs were still being block allocated to Vietnam. 4 of us from my class came to the 409th (Dale Hussey, Galen Yoder, Floyd Youngblood and myself) and all of us went to Phu Bai when the 409th shut down.
Great site. Thanks
JP
PS: Please update my name in the directory to Joseph Moring (vice Morning).

I was with the 409th also. When the Cav left I went to the 407th RRD at Quan Tri. 2nd tour.

I was one of the original boat people of the 11th cav and 409th ASA. Shortly after arrival in Viet Nam I was reassigned to 303rd. Have lost most of the memory of back then and some things I don't care to remember. I would like to here from some of my fellow brothers that servedwith me or remember me at all. I did the morning reports for the 409th as we traveled the high seas to Charlie Country. One name stands out to me as I look over the rosters and web pages. Harry Swope. fgor some reason his name rings a bell to me but can't think of why. Give me a shout if you can ALONS

I was a 71B with the 409th ASA DET with the 11th cav when it left for Viet Nam. I do remember the boat ride over and the trip to the compound. I was transfered over to battalion a few months after arriving in country. I worked with Capt dunlap aboard ship making out the morning report . What a boring job!

I am Galen P. Lane My tour of duty with the Det was May to December 1969. At that time I was an SFC E-7 98C type. I arrive in the Det area at An Loc late one afternoon in May and when I reported in the Orderly Room I found out the 1SG (who I believed his last name was Jankins or Jenkins or something similiar to that). was on his way back to states on emergency leave. I never did see him anymore. The only NCO in the Det after the 1SG left was aSFC Charles Lane, Operations Sergeant, (no kin to me) who I was schedule to replace. Charles rotate back to the states about 10 days later. At this time our management team include the CO, Cpt James Pardew (Believe he was from Arkansas and don't think he was a career type officer), a fresh 2d Lt fresh from the states and myself. We had an outstanding Company Clerk who was very helpful. Alot of water has went on the bridge since then but I believe his name was B.J. ???? Don't remember his last name. Before I could get my duffal bag empty I was inform that I was going to take the advance party (Det Operations section) to Quan Loi with the 11th ACR. Cpt Pardew and administrative type stayed in An Loc. O HAPPY DAY. I must close for now; however, I will try to get back with you in a few days and finish my 409th story as I seen it. I have pictures of the 409th activities while I was over there. Will try to find them and send you a copy. CUL Galen

Was looking at the pictures and saw THE PIG PEN posted by Art Ehrenberg. I was the driver and then the TC when it got its name and when the interior changed colors. Can anyone tell me the interior color or THE PIG PEN in 1969. If you can I'll tell you hoe it got that lovely shade of ____.

At our last meeting of the North Texas ASA group I learned that there is now a published history of the ASA in Vietnam. Just got my copy today. Haven't had time to read it yet but it appears to be a nice overview of what we did over there. Even has a picture of one of the 409th tracks. If anyone is interested it can be ordered from the US Government Printing Office, www.access.gpo.gov. The title is "The Most Secret War, US Army Signals Intelligence In Vietnam". The cost is $35.00 which includes shipping. Unfortunately the shipping is via USPS and mine arrived with a broken binding, but hopefully you will have better luck. Don

I spoke to Dean Hewitt tonight, who had Jesse's phone number, and BJ's current home town. I tried to e-mail you at th2829, but it was returned. E-mail me with your new e-mail address and I will send you the info. Hope you can make it to Daytona Beach next year. Don Dauphin

05/13/03 06:22:17 AM Dean H. HewittChicago, IllinoisHi Everyone,I found you guys because my daughter was asked by her teacher to bring in information about Vietnam by her teacher. I knew there was a web site somewhere.... Anyway, I served with the 409th RRD from September 2, 1968 to September 1, 1969 and Again from October 12, 1970 to when the unit left in February of 1971. It was a time that has given me strength to complete many things and the humbleness to understand and accept the defeats that life gives all of us. I am right now trying to reach Jimmy Werner who has the box with all the addresses of all the men who served with the 409th RRD during Vietnam. He was in the St. Louis area a couple of years ago and we had talked. He has moved and I will try again this week to contact him. Maybe we can get something done to increase the reunion this year or for sure in Daytona in 2004. Wish me luck.I do want to thank you all for the support all you have given me during our time together as it has made me the person I am today.Dean H. Hewitt plazapt@aol.com
